1. Scope

This Standard covers the standardization of dimensions of welded and seamless wrought steel pipe for high or low temperatures and pressures. 

The word pipe is used, as distinguished from tube, to apply to tubular products of dimensions commonly use for pipeline and piping systems. Pipe NPS 12 (DN 300) and smaller have outside diameters numerically larger than their corresponding sizes. In contrast, the outside diameters of tubes are numerically identical to the size number for all sizes.

2. Size

The size of all pipe is identified by the nominal pipe size.The manufacture of pipe NPS 1⁄8 (DN 6) to NPS 12

(DN 300), inclusive, is based on a standardized outside diameter (OD). This OD was originally selected so that pipe with a standard OD and having a wall thickness that was typical of the period would have an inside diameter (ID) approximately equal to the nominal size. Although there is no such relation between the existing standard thickness — OD and nominal size — these nominal sizes and standard ODs continue in use as ‘‘standard.’’ The manufacture of pipe NPS 14 (DN 350) and larger proceeds on the basis of an OD corresponding to the nominal size.

Hydrostatic Test for A53 Steel Tubes

The hydrostatic test shall be applied, without leakage through the weld seam or the pipe body.

The minimum hydrostatic test pressure required to satisfy the requirements specified in 8.2 need not exceed 2500 psi [17 200 kPa] for pipe NPS 3 [DN 80] or smaller, or 2800 psi [19 300 kPa] for pipe larger than NPS 3 [DN 80]; however, the manufacturer has the option of using higher test pressures. For all sizes of seamless pipe and electric-resistance-welded pipe, the hydrostatic test pressure shall be maintained for at least 5 s.

Nondestructive Electric Test for A53 Pipe Schedule 40

The weld seam of each length of electric-resistance welded pipe NPS 2 [DN 50] or larger shall be tested with a nondestructive electric test in accordance with Practices E 213, E 273, E 309.

US keeps antidumping duties on Chinese steel threaded rod, malleable iron pipe

The US government determined on Tuesday that it would maintain the existing antidumping duty orders on steel threaded rod and malleable iron pipe fittings from China, despite Beijing's repeated calls for Washington to drop protectionism.

The US International Trade Commission (ITC) concluded in a ruling that revoking the current antidumping duty orders on these products from China would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of material injury within a reasonably foreseeable time.

It is the first "sunset review" for the antidumping duty order on imports of steel threaded rod from China, which was introduced in 2009. The antidumping duty margin on this product runs from 47. 37% to 206%.

This is the second "sunset review" for the antidumping duty order on imports of malleable iron pipe fittings from China, which was first issued in 2003. The antidumping duty margin on the product runs up to 111.36%.

A "sunset review" was conducted every five years after anti-dumping and countervailing duties were introduced. The Uruguay Round Agreements Act requires the US Department of Commerce to revoke an anti-dumping or countervailing duty order, or terminate a suspension agreement, after five years unless the department and the ITC determine that revoking the order or terminating the suspension agreement would likely lead to the continuation or recurrence of dumping or subsidies and of material injury within a reasonably foreseeable time.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has repeatedly urged the United States to abide by its commitment against trade protectionism and work together with China and other members of the international community to maintain a free, open and just international trade environment.

US Steel to Idle 2 Tubular Facilities in Pennsylvania and Texas

United States Steel Corporation announced that it will indefinitely idle two tubular manufacturing facilities at McKeesport in Pennsylvania and at Bellville in Texas, in early August, impacting approximately 260 employees as a result of business conditions which are influenced by unfairly traded tubular products imported into the United States.

The indefinite idling of these loss-making operations will reduce the number of US Steel's tubular facilities from 10 to eight, but will enable the company to operate more profitably as it repositions to meet future customer demand.

Approximately 45 professional and management employees and 215 represented employees were advised today of the upcoming idling and resulting job reductions and are being issued notices under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.

US Steel President and CEO Mr Mario Longhi stated "US Steel remains fully committed to the tubular products business and to serving our tubular customers. While these are difficult decisions, they are necessary in order to return our company to sustainable profitability and position us for future growth. We will continue to fight unfair trade by foreign competitors who are creating a detrimental impact and threat to middle-class paying manufacturing jobs."

US Steel, along with other domestic producers, has filed an anti-dumping action with the US Department of Commerce to halt the unfair trading and dumping of foreign Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) into the American market.

US Steel will continue to produce and finish tubular products at its facilities in Alabama, Arkansas, Ohio and Texas where it employs approximately 2,900 employees.
